Name: Lecanora varia (Hoffm.) Ach.

Pronunciation: Lecanora varia

Conservation Evaluation: Least Concern Body Type: Crustose

Lecanora varia

Description: The thallus is creamy white with a green or yellow tinge and a granular appearance. The granules tend to be spherical and give the thallus a shiny texture. Mature specimens may show the cracked paving stone or areolate form. Apothecia are circular, cup-shaped and abundant, though not crowded together; the apothecia margin can be quite crenulated. Their size varies from 0.4 mm to 1.5 mm in diameter, though typically they are consistently around the 1 mm size. The disc surface is brown with a tint of either yellow or green. The rim of the apothecia often overhangs the disc surface and can be smooth, crenulated or convoluted. Soredia are lacking. Pseudotrebouxia

Nature Notes: Frequently found on fences and posts, particularly on the horizontal surfaces. The apothecia may grow in lines following the grain of the wood. It is also found on trees, but this is rare. In Ireland the distribution is very scattered. It is an early colonizer of sawn wood.
