… by genus: Xanthoria
Xanthoria: Greek: Xanthos = yellow. All species in this group are foliose with some shade of yellow to orange colour. Generally specimens found in shaded areas (such as the underside of a branch) will be predominantly grey. They all have apothecia and a thalline margin. Spores are found packaged 8 to an ascus and they tend to be colourless and polarilocular. Isidia and soredia are normally present to some degree. Most are K+ purple and they have a tendency to inhabit nutrient rich areas (nitrogen-loving).
