‘Old’ Woodlands, including dead wood

Lobaria pulmonaria

Old Woodlands refer to woodlands that have been uninterrupted since the 1830s. There are only 12,500 Ha. of old woodland left in Ireland. Lichens specific to this type of woodland require a stable unchanging environment for reasons not fully understood but without doubt relate to the ecology of lichens and their reproduction cycles. The lichens listed here are classified as ‘old woodland species’.
